Hard House Academy - Review

Reported by tom / Submitted 15-08-01 12:08

Christ the Academy is big. I mean it really is big. Big big big big, totally seriously absopositivelyfuckinglutely big. Hello there, are you getting the picture yet ? It's big, OK ? And still Frantic have managed to fill it to the darkest murkiest corner with studious clubbers ready for an evening of education in the finer points of hard house.

I'll just say from the start that I wasn't there to be a reviewer, I was there to party so as opposed to checking out all the arenas and all the DJ's I found the music I liked and stayed wherever it was. I should also say that I've never managed to find the entrance to one of the rooms (called London Hard House City) at the Academy, though I haven't looked that hard cos there's so many other goodies to be found.

After taking a few shots from above the main arena (for all the photos for this event look here) we switched around for an hour or two between the entrance 'Big Room DJs' arena and the main arena as the music was fairly dark and hard and not the bouncy uplifting hard house that I prefer. Spencer Freeland's set was not bad but not completely there for me although as an early playing DJ you can't thrash it out and ruin the rest of the night. The night really got going with the next DJ, problem is I can't work out if it was Ed Real, Dave Randall or someone else ? Let me know in the forums if you know. Whoever it was was one of the most entertaining DJs behind (and in front of) the decks, really putting loads of effort into winding up the crowds, esp. a tasty dance routine in front of the decks. The set was marred by problems with one of the decks which was skipping every minute or so which killed the momentum of a lot of the tracks. It took a while to get fixed until a roadie slapped in what I think was a new stylus which seemed to sort it out. Squash balls under the Technics and a 1p piece blu-tacked to the needle will sort ya out mate !

Next up: Phil Reynolds' set was probably the best I've heard from anyone this year, playing non-stop uplifting hard dancing tracks that had had the corpses in nearby Brixton cemetery twitching their toes and doing their 'big fish, little fish' routines. It was just totally relentless, there was no pause, no time to catch your breath, no time to refill the water bottle or rest those aching calves just punishing punishing punishing tunes delivered with a grin. It was just like the classic Frantic closing sets he's played in the past at the Camden Palace which are still scarred across my memory. He played quite a few tracks from the recent Frantic album including (I think) Binary Finary's 1998 and K90's Deliverance amongst the track selection. The dancefloor was just one wild mass of jumping whooping clubbers and verily God saw that it was good.

It was during Phil's set that something very weird happened, we were standing relatively close to the front in the middle where most of the smoke was being pumped. They chucked in a load of smoke and then kicked in the full-on house strobes. Result: I couldn't see anything in any direction except white misty flashes which was extremely cool for about 10 seconds until I started getting paranoid that maybe this was my brain caving in and I was passing out or something, some kind of 'walk into the light' type near-death experience moment. Kinda funny when the smoke cleared to think back on it but not something I'd experienced before.

At the end of the set I moved back to the foyer arena to catch Nick Sentience play some of his trademark mix of techno meets trance meets hard house. The guy has so much talent it's scary, I'd recommend anyone buy the Nukleuz 'International Big Room Tunes' CD for his mix on CD2 which gets better every time I listen to it. For such a small area (actually a pretty crap place to put a dancefloor) the place was totally rocking and it was painful for me to drag myself away at 5:30 to get to....

The cloakroom queue Frown Frown Frown

This was not good. It's the second time it's happened to me at a Frantic (last time was at the Camden Palace last year); I arrived to collect my bag at 5:30am (i.e. half an hour before the end) as I had a bag full of harderfaster flyers to hand out. I eventually got outside at 6:45am after standing in a sweltering corridor for that long (kudos to the guy who managed to persuade the security chick on the chair to open one of the doors to let some air in !). When I left, the queue was twice as long as when I arrived so god knows what time some people left. On the plus side though maybe they'll still be there for the party this weekend...

From what I heard from friends Andy Farley played a technically brilliant closing set which had the crowd going wild bastards bastards bastards can't believe I missed it to stand in a queue...

Overall though one of the finest nights out possible for anyone who likes their house served hard and furious. My only regret was not seeing more of the DJs on the bill, esp. Eamonn Fevah B2b Riksta, Tara Reynolds and Yoshi who is one of the top HH DJs from down under.

Frantic return to The Academy on 20th October for the launch of Lab4's new album 'Virus'. We'll be there.
