More: The Boutique’s 10th Birthday at Turnmills on Saturday 5th August will be one of clubland’s landmark occasions. A hedonistic paradise over 4 rooms. At a time when the musical barriers on today’s dancefloors seem to be as open as ever, a sizeable amount of recognition must be pointed in the direction of the often cited “UK’s biggest smallest club”. The groundbreaking Brighton club night have for a decade now been committed to supporting electronic dance music’s ever evolving genres as they materialise from the recording studios to decks and into the backroom dance floors to eventually reaching a worldwide recognition as a fully established genre. From 1996 the club was a small get together in a venue opposite the Brighton Pier and lead the way in developing a new attitude and influences to the techno and house records that were being produced and the club nights that supported them. By infusing electronica, guitars, and rare hidden samples sourced from hip hop to soul, varying the drum patterns away from the four to the floor formula and always booking a live indie/electronic band onstage each night, but never drifting from the acid house ethos. Big Beat Boutique had helped give birth to this exciting new sound and eclecticism that swept the UK, Europe and finally the world. As rock/dance/indie continues to crossover, the Boutique has been doing this since its inception. Was the Boutique the blue print for today’s electro and indie clubs like Trash and Optimo? The Boutique was the right environment to encourage DJs the freedom to play outside of their box’s and add just about anything they wanted into the party mix and make sure a fun filled night was had but still maintained a underlying credible music program which back in 1996 was a total revelation.

The Boutique changed the way club nights were perceived and what they should play. Along the way there have been more highs than a back-to-mine session with the Rolling Stones and hanging out with The Happy Mondays. As well as helping launch the careers of some of the world’s most accomplished artists such as Jaques Lu Cont, The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada and numerous DJs and producers from independent labels such as Wall of Sound and Skint Records. But this fact shouldn't over shadow the club itself, the clubs unique approach to fusing style's and genres has continued for 10 years and recently has been supported by artists such as LCD SOUNDSYSTEM, EROL ALKAN, 2MANYDJS, FELIX DA HOUSECAT, IVAN SMAGHHE and MYLO.

From that humble first Tuesday night opposite Brighton Pier which saw 250 people congregate, to having 250,000 ravers turn up with the shell fish on the beach at Fatboys infamous Big Beach Boutique, and footage of the club night being shown on Top Of the Pops was all at the fun end of what the Boutique is about. More importantly its longstanding residency at Fabric when it first opened its doors and then its nights at Heaven with co promoters Bugged Out, summer nights at Pacha/Ibiza with XPress 2, DJ battles in Brixton, organising Jamie Liddell and Christian’s "freakin the frame" club nights, Radio 1's and NME after parties, its genre rocking “On The Floor At The Boutique” compilations and touring the UKs live music venues with its “bands booze and fags tour”. Of course this all soon led to approaches from the UKs more corporate club brands with a view to moving into Brighton to operate their own Boutique venue. But the club stayed true to its independent beliefs and picked up numerous “best event” or “club night of the year” awards as well as regularly hosting festival tents for Creamfields from Liverpool to Brazil but more importantly appearing twice at Reading and Leeds, a rock and indie festival. No other club has achieved this broad appeal but also proving they could play with the big boys. The Boutique has always leaded by example. Not afraid of trying something new and pulling it off on a massive level.

Boutique curator and visionary Gareth Hansome looks forward to the prestigious 10th Birthday bash; “As with all our “special event Boutique parties” the line up tries to cover a lot of bases and reflects our ongoing pursuit of quality DJs and producers and hopefully clubbers whether they are established, innovators or local hero’s promoting their own word of mouth parties for the committed open minded music and club night lovers. Its hard trying to fit so many influences from over the years into one venue in a coherent manner and encapsulate the “if you like a bit of that, then your going to love a bit of this” attitude and music policy. The anniversary party is a gathering and reflection of the non commercial DJs who do it for the music and hedonistic party lovers. A snapshot of the future and what’s happening on the more discerning dance floors across the world rather than a tiresome retrospective. I have been a totally independent club night/event promoter but encouraged strong associations with like minded labels, venues and, promoters and I would hope we have been very consistent promoting up and coming electronic music styles and genres as well as the DJs and live acts, especially the ones that are still working hard to establish themselves so we’ve got them next to the big guns. DJs like Philippe Zdar, Robert Hood and Dave Clarke are world class. It’s very important to me that everyone is represented on the anniversary. We’ve been very single minded in supporting this type of attitude in the face of the over commercialised and the often predictable dance club nights that also exist the Boutique wont open it doors on that street. It’s the total package and our history over ten years that counts and has made us last.”

With that in mind, Gareth has carefully crafted together a sublime line-up with the unstoppable techno legend DAVE CLARKE headlining with a extremely rare appearance from his good pal ROBERT HOOD who will be playing a world exclusive set called the “Grey Area SET” this features Roberts own material from his Hoodmusic 1&2 albums and his M-Plan&Music Man labels taking us from House to Minimal &Techno plus the Underground Resistance mix of his new release “Still Hear”

Across 3 other rooms are French electronic pioneers CASSIUS' Philippe Zdar and underground party promoter’s secretsundaze residents – JAMES PRIESTLEY and GILES SMITH, bedroom belters and east London after party hero’s LIL LUCY, TOBY TOBIAS, THE INSURGENTS and DANNY CLARK offer up some names to watch. DJ TOUCHE and rising Brighton star RADIOSLAVE represent the clubs London to Brighton resident roots.

If Turnmills had a outdoor terrace over-looking the London skyline and smoking chimneys ideally it would be filled with live acts bursting the speakers on stage to the distorted mash up sound and the Boutique’s other reference point and historical musical roots, indie rave, punk funk and electro but alas we don’t so come and join the next best thing, London’s ADVENTURES CLOSE TO HOME DJS, Ill Will and Choaf in the mezzanine all night.

Gareth describes the importance of having such loyal residents DJ that are capable in blowing the roof off on demand… “DJ TOUCHE has been our longest serving DJ. We knew he was good when his first ever set at the club was on four decks. He was wearing a woolly hat and a pair of skiing goggles and I thought yep, we’ll have some of that. Entertaining and extremely versatile, no groove based sets here. Raw dirty rhythms, fucked up robotic vocals punctuating his adventurous mixes. Touche likes to take a risk and when he does, he always pulls it off, presently working on his Black Ghost project and with Fischerspooner. Although not a resident in the true sense, Matt’s (RADIOSLAVE) representing the Brighton connection and has been a regular at our club nights for sometime. An extremely versatile producer (Quiet Village, Rekid and Radioslave) he’s getting the props he deserves, whether he is re-editing Jay-Z or Paul McCartney, or releasing his amazing deep, experimental electronic album as Rekids – it’s quality all the way. I know I can totally trust Matt to do a great job leading into Robert Hood at our birthday.”

The last of the Boutique bunch THE INSURGENTS are dirty warehouse Shoreditch stalwarts. Ex-Electric Stew residents, they can be found at East London’s finest Sunday night/Monday morning institution Retox. They’ve been producing their own material for just over a year, and played regularly in Brighton. Totally dedicated, they’re out all night and day and are definitely ones to watch.

So 10 YEARS IN THE MAKING. The Boutique are on the verge of something truly epic come August. So why the love, why the success, why the desire to keep partying…“The Boutique has only survived because of the great rush of hearing something fresh in a record or mix and my blind faith in good DJs and a great party. It keeps me going as there’s no big office with lots of staff and big money backers, just the parties and our followers. If the venues staff and management weren’t dancing with us at the end of the night we’d move onto a new venue. That’s why we’re at Turnmills for our 10th Birthday. DJs want to come and play for us for the right reasons; the music and the dance floors reaction. We have been blessed with some amazing associations that have turned into long term partnerships but ultimately we’ve remained independent, open-minded, adaptable, very versatile and have NEVER over marketed ourselves (our golden rule) mix this with a hunger for whatever’s around the corner…that’s why its called The Boutique.” (Gareth Hansome, The Boutique).
