FRIDAY 11 April
NO POP MUSIC - Tony Finger (TOuch it Records) 9-12pm
As one of the up-coming producers and DJs of the current electronic scene Tony Finger drops his first Album ‘No Pop Music’ on his own label – Touch it Records. The album features 14 tracks written & produced by Tony to showcase what his label is all about; as well as a second exclusive CD, compiled & mixed with the latest and hottest international tracks in sophisticated funky, sexy electro house.
With its wide ranging and genre defying grooves, crossing between house, electro & progressive, Touch It records is fast gaining interest and support from the worldwide scene. Soon to join the label (as producers and remixers) are Jorge Jaramillo (Who da Funk), Dino Moran and many up & coming global artist.
But let’s be clear about one thing – “This is not only an artist album” says Tony. “This is a club orientated album. It is fun, groovy, melodic, rocking, emotional, and crazy (like me)”. Visit www.nopopmusic.net for more info.
The single NO POP MUSIC, reached the top 10 on djdownload.com after only 1 week in January 2008. It has also been reviewed by IDJ Magazine in the UK – "There is no space for pop music" the synthesized vocal tells us here. There is it seems, however, space for yet another slice of "yeah yeah" alike, electro house by numbers. That rather sniffily said, this has got bags of energy and the kids will probably love it! So there you go!
Dino Moran, Roger Goode, Dean Fuel and Lady Lea are rocking the dancefloors and pumping the airwaves with singles from NO POP MUSIC.
SATURDAY 12 APRIL
Dj Thalia (JHB) 9-12pm
Daughter of jazz bassist Pete Sklair, Thalia grew up around music. She began her classical training in piano at the age of 9, and went on to vocal training at 13.
While in matric in 2004, she sang alongside a jazz pianist at Harrisons restaurant/bar for 6 months, after her band of 2 years broke up.
Thalia's DJing career began in 2005 when she completed a beginners DJ course at Soul Candi. Four months later she went on to do advanced scratching/turntablism course at Retro Music. While she was busy with that, she started giving DJ lessons at Capitol Music Cafe and stayed in this for 3 months. From the start Thalia has had a progressive feel to her music, and now plays driving progressive house beats to her rocking dancefloors. She has also been known to bring down the house with her groovy Tech-style tunes.
Thalia has done audio sampling and scratching work with bands such as electric jazz band Unofficial Language at the Radium Beer Hall, and she continuely uses these techniques in her sets, as well as adding her own vocals over the tracks.
She has played at private parties as well as at nightclubs in JHB such as
Cafe New York;
Fashion society;
DJ lounge;
Black Orchid;
Ku-De-Ta;
The Crazy 88;
Corona Cafe;
Club Skandal;
Partyhouse;
Roka Lounge;
Aruba Lounge;
H2O Sutra;
Club Mojito (centurion);
Submission;
The Bang Bang Club (Cape Town);
Velvet (Cape Town);
Wacjaw (Kimberley);
and has played as far as Zambia.
She has been featured on MK89's MKchat (live), Go's GoChat (Live) as well as on 5fm's Vinyl Frontier.
Thalia completed a music production/engineering course at Soul Candi and has now started producing her own tracks.
She won the annual Gemini DJ Battle 2007, being the only female djette making it to the finals. She also made it to the semi-finals of the SYLD (suppost your local DJ) competition South Africa.
She has just completed vocal recording on a jazz album, an is working on some sizzling hot house tunes due for release.
