Following in the footsteps of regional heroes like Club Class, Bugged Out! and Bedrock, Portsmouth’s burgeoning Punchfunk are exporting their irresistible brand of chunky electro, phat house and juicy techno from their hugely successful parties on the South Coast and bringing it to one of London’s most acclaimed and most stunning club venues – The Key.
Punchfunk began life in June 2004, when Portsmouth residents Chris Vaux and Simon Blann felt that there was nothing in the city which catered for the musical preferences of themselves and their friends. “I wanted to have a party for my mates, at a small 130-capacity room in a club in Portsmouth” says Vaux. “Within 3 events we had taken over the whole club. The club then got shut down, and we moved to a small bar before The Opera House in Bournemouth offered us Room 2 at their new night Refresh. We had more people in our room than Eric Prydz in the main arena”.
Since those early days, the promotion has attracted some of the world’s most revered DJs such as Carl Craig, Nic Fanciulli and Funk D’Void. Meat Katie and Slam both loved playing for Punchfunk so much that they asked to be invited back! With a residents roster featuring Justin Robertson, Phil Kieran, Trevor Rockcliffe and hot new talents Jon Gurd and Dave Robertson alongside Chris and Simon, Punchfunk is truly a force to be reckoned with.
The superb Punchfunk record label was launched in 2006 and has so far featured the likes of Fergie, Valentino Kanzyani and Trevor Rockcliffe, fast staking its claim as one of the most exciting new imprints around with its mixture of new talent and world-famous artists. The digital offshoot has also been doing a roaring trade, showcasing fresh material from young producers the world over. Their stage at Godskitchen Global Gathering 2006 was also a massive success, leaving the Punchfunk mark on the UK’s biggest dance music festival.
The London Launch Party sees Punchfunk take over all 3 of The Key’s resplendent rooms, with Fergie and his beginning his exclusive London residency at the club. His Excentric Muzik label hosts the main room, with another headline slot from the awesome electro/techno fusionist Gregor Tresher of Sven Väth’s Teutonic-powerhouse Cocoon – hosts of some of Ibiza’s most talked-about and acclaimed parties over the last few years. Ireland’s hottest electro act The Japanese Popstars bring their unique brand of party-starting filth to the main room alongside Rob Mooney of ‘Feelin’ Electro’ fame, while in Room 2 Lee Jarvis from London heroes Moochin’ brings some funky-tech flavours alongside Punchfunk residents and guests. Room 3 is not to be missed either with Jon ‘The Rendition’ Gurd headlining along with the Illicit Audio DJs.
If you don’t know already – you’d better get to know. 2007 is the year of Punchfunk.
