An Open Air Dance Event scheduled to take place in Sutherland on Friday July 22nd is being billed as the biggest event of its kind since a beach party held in the county four years ago. Around 2500 music lovers attended the memorable "Velvet Nights" event on Dornoch Beach in 2001 and similar numbers are expected this time around.
Sutherland music promoter Mark Kent organised the Dornoch bash and he is also behind next month's event at the Invershin Hotel where proprietors David and Molly Grant have established the only live music outdoors venue in the North of Scotland.
Mr Kent, who is based in Tamline, is promoting the dance under the theme "Shinful Nights," in a clever wordplay for the "Theme" at the Invershin Hotel. Following the 2001 beach party he gave up organising dance events to concentrate on other aspects of his music business, but recently decided to start up again after he was approached by local youngsters who complained there was nothing for them to do in the area.
He explained: "I did a whole stream of events in 2001 including the beach party and a number of dances in Lairg which were very successful, but then gave it up to concentrate on backing tracks. "About three months ago I decided to start off the dance events again and tested out the waters at Bonar Bridge.
It was very successful so I then began organising events at Lairg. "I used to bring busloads of people from around the county and even from as far field as Inverness to Lairg and that is what I intend to do again. I want to bring up the profile of the dance scene in Sutherland. "Lairg Village Hall management committee has been very kind to me and backed the venture 100 per cent.
There has never been any problems. People have come, enjoyed themselves and gone and it seems to work very well all the time." Kicking off at 3pm on the Friday and continuing through the night until around am the following morning,
"Shinful Nights," will feature top UK Dj Lisa Loud who is known as the 'First Lady of Dance Music." and is also well known as a fashion icon
She will be backed by a line-up of other London dj's from CUBE (aka Dex and Hemlock), Paul K and Lisa London who have all played major London venues Mass Brixton,Flashback, Club Supreme, Hectic and EZ Duzzit plus other dj's managed by Mr Kent's music company, Wildfire.
They will include Talitha, Wildfire's premier dj who has already played at Mass, Brixton and is resident at Club K, who will be playing the prestigious CUBE, PULSE Boat Party in London on 18th June.
Wildfire Dj's will include Gemma G, Rolfe, Martin Cardno, JR Overdrive, Foley, Fastraxx and Luca. There will be a mixture of the very best dance music entertainment which will include Trance, Hard House, Bouncy House, New Energy and Progressive sets.
With the support of hoteliers Molly and Dave Grant, the music will also continued throughout the week-end. "The dance event will finish at around am and then we will have a break before starting up again at about 6.30pm with doss and a live music, details of which we will be releasing at a later date," said Mr Kent.
