94.7 Highveld Stereo and Big Concerts bring you Lionel Richie
His latest album is entitled Coming Home and Lionel Richie, one of the most accomplished artists of our time explains that both the song used as its title and the album itself are, for him, symbolic: “It’s my ‘older, wiser’ song. Anyone who has lived life to any degree knows what I mean.
I feel like I’m coming home on many levels, personally and musically. My foundation was in R&B and with this album, I found that many of the musical techniques and approaches I used back in 1974, 1975, 1976 still do work today. I had wonderful collaborations with current writers on this record and you know what? All of them said, ‘you gotta throw in an ‘ow’ or a ‘girl…’, referring to all those old licks I used in the Commodores records! The result is we have a 2006 record that really sounds like an ‘old school’ Lionel Richie album with a ‘new school’ flavor!”
Coming Home effortlessly provides the bridge between Lionel’s rich musical legacy and now, with soul-satisfying performances that will evoke memories for some and create new ones for others. Lionel: “I am reminded of those times when I wrote with The Commodores when we bounced off one another creatively: they brought the R&B ‘thing,’ I had the pop and country flavor. I’ve missed that urban element which hasn’t been there to the extent that it is on this record, thanks to working with L.A. Reid who was overseeing the project and the exciting young writers and producers who collaborated with me on this album.
The song “I’m Coming Home” really says it for me because that’s what I’m doing – especially after being around the world twice year for the last few years! It’s been great seeing people pull out the welcoming mat for me with this record.
With songs like “You Are” - which is very real, very earthy, “I Call It Love” and “I Love You” – people hear something ‘familiar,’ they hear Lionel Richie from back in the day…and everyone starts smiling!“
