Background
Updated 27-01-07 12:01
I started DJing back in 1993, buying all sorts of records such as "Out Of Space" by Prodigy, "On A Ragga Tip" by SL2 and "Sweet Harmony" by Liquid to name but a few. I have been through various phases since, broadening my DJ repertoir with genres such as Jungle and early Breakbeats, but mainly sticking with the happy side of the scene.
At the end of 1994, it was clear to me that any kind of happy and ravey sound would give me natural ecstasy! It was around that time that Hardcore became happier by the day, using euphoric piano melodies and classic ravey stabs. Although I was there from the birth of Happy Hardcore, I was also in the wrong country where it was obvious that this style of music would never take off, despite tremendous efforts by a few of us back there.
By 1996 I'd even tried promoting Happy Hardcore in the country's most popular magazine for dance music and rave culture at the time, mainly by reviewing new releases. The same year, I started a night along with a couple more experienced promoters, with various styles of music and a few big guest DJs on rotation. The playlist included genres such as Hip-Hop, House, Drum & Bass and Happy Hardcore. We managed to achieve a very unique atmosphere, which at the time was all we had aimed for. At the same time I was also doing a weekly FM (like there was streaming back then!) radio show on a prestigious dance music station. Despite all the above, Happy Hardcore was indeed what I had always suspected it to be: A London Thing!
In 1998 I moved to London and soon began playing at house parties and various small events. In 1999 I won the first heat of a DJ competition in West London, showing off what I could do in eight minutes with some of my favourite Old Skool classic anthems. Mr. LTJ Bukem was the judge that night, an experience I’ll never forget!
In 2000 Hardcore took a big step back from its huge, though still underground status. A limited amount of records were being produced by the few loyal artists who remained in the scene (and yes, they are worth mentioning since they are responsible for the revival and reshaping of Hardcore) such as Hixxy & Styles, Brisk & Ham and Scott Brown. By the end of that year my biggest influences had also announced their retirement so it was really a good time to take a break.
I made a comeback mid 2004 along with the evolution of Upfront Hardcore and was extremely busy catching up with the scene, producing mixes and doing live shows on various internet streaming radios. I managed to get the most mixes up on the Slammin' Vinyl award winning HappyHardcore.Com radio in a rather short period of time!
June 2005 saw the birth of Hardcore Xpression (HX), a brand new hardcore daytime event in London started by MC Mayers and myself. With one-offs such as the October all-nighter and the November afterparty, HX built up a loyal following with outstanding performances from all involved! By the end of that year I decided to focus more on production and DJing and so took a step back from the promotion of HX.
In 2006 I got into the studio and produced my first tune "Raggamuffin Rock!", the first version of which was signed on the Hardcore Underground compilation. An alternative version was also produced, "Rudeboy Rock!" with my good friend Tino on the mic for my first vinyl release. "Original Dangerous" and "Fill Me To The Top" followed soon after, and this is only the beginning!! Watch this space for more, I've got myself a keyboard and a vocalist! Later on that year I got my first major booking at Hardcore Euphoria alongside the likes of Slipmatt, Force, Styles and Brisk!
I currently have over 30 mixes up on HappyHardcore.Com radio which are played at random on a regular basis and are also broadcast from the biggest internet radio, Digitally Imported - Hardcore Channel. I am also about to start my own streaming radio show on History of Hardcore on Sunday afternoons, featuring MC Chit Chat and Laura on the mic with various guest DJs from time to time.
