Background
Updated 28-01-04 19:01
I moved to London 5 years ago to pursue a career in Bars and Nightclubs but found it very hard to break into. As with all industries, it tends to be a case of "It's not what you know it's who you know." I got a place living with a group of Kiwi blokes and they took me to my first Hard Dance club, Fevah at the Tube on Tottenham Court Road. I was hoooked straight away and became a regular every Sunday. After developing a taste for the music, the people and the atmosphere, I started to venture out more often, or as often as my career would allow, and frequented such promotions as Solid Sunday at the Mean Fiddler, XLR8 at the Office bar, Fahrenhite at the Soundshaft and Provocation at the Office bar. I was clubbing pretty much every weekend solid for 2 years going to at least 2 or 3 parties a weekend.
Approximately 2 and 1/2 years ago some friends and I had a party at the Hanover Grand for one of our mate's birthdays, the party was a total success and the owners were extremely happy with the way things went and asked us if we would like to make it a regular thing. We all agreed and Sunday School was born. We made quite a big impact on the London Clubbing Scene but due to inexperience, a few bad business decisions and an ultimate lack of funding, Sunday School came to a close after only 8 parties. However, some of those parties have given me the best memories of my life to date.
It was during my time promoting Sunday School that I bought my first set of decks, back in September of 2001. I only initially bought the decks so that I would know, as a promoter, how DJ's should be treated as it always seemed to me that DJ's didn't really get the respect they deserved from the people who were running the promotions. My first time playing out was purely by chance, I ended up playing last set at one of the now Infamous Finger Parties on New Years Eve 2001 in Acton. Needless to say I was nervous as hell, but it went reasonably well and this spurred me on even more to hone my DJ skills. After this I was promoting full time for Sunday School and this allowed me a lot of time at home to learn. I had the distinct advantage of having a lot of friends who were excellent DJ's so I spent most of my time watching what they were doing to see if I coould pick up any tips. I can still be found most of the time standing in or around the DJ box watching what's going on..
When I first started I never expected to get to where I am today as there is so much competition from so many good DJ's on the London circuit, but the constant networking and badgering promoters finally seems to have started paying off. Long may it continue..
